Latent TB Infection (LTBI) is not contagious in nature (person to person transmission). It is an effective strategy to curb the growth of active TB in high burden countries like India & China that has an estimated 30-40% of the total population infected with LTBI. In US, an estimated 14 million individuals are infected with latent TB and the individuals are typically exposed to immigrants from high burden countries, prison environments, healthcare workers, troops deployed outside of the US & injection drug users (IDC) that have active TB.

It is an effective strategy by the high burden countries to inhibit the growth of active TB cases by identifying LTBI cases and offer prophylactic treatment before they progress into active TB.
